1. Introduction

Severedwing ("Severedwing," "we," "us," or "our") is an independent retail boutique offering vintage home décor, one-of-a-kind merchandise, jewelry, gifts, candles, body care, fragrances, vinyl records, books, handmade goods, barware, locally made products, and lifestyle accessories. We value the trust our customers place in us, and we treat your personal information with the same care we bring to everything else we do.

This Privacy Policy explains what information we collect when you visit our website, how we use it, who we share it with, and the choices available to you.

2. Scope

This Privacy Policy applies to www.severedwing.com (the "Site") and to the information we collect through the Site, including when you browse, make a purchase, opt in to receive marketing communications, or contact us. It does not apply to third-party websites we may link to, and it does not govern information collected in person at any physical location unless that information is entered into the same systems described here.

By using the Site, you acknowledge the practices described in this Privacy Policy. If you do not agree with them, please do not use the Site.

3. Definitions

For clarity, a few terms used throughout this policy:

  • "Personal information" means information that identifies you or can reasonably be linked to you, such as your name, email address, shipping address, or payment details.

  • "Order" means a purchase placed through the Site.

  • "Service providers" means the third-party companies that help us operate the Site and fulfill Orders, such as our ecommerce platform, payment processors, and shipping carriers.

  • "You" means the person visiting the Site or making a purchase.

4. Information We Collect

We collect personal information you provide directly to us, including:

  • Order information. When you place an Order, we collect your name, email address, billing address, shipping address, phone number (if provided), and details of the items you purchase.

  • Account information. If the Site allows you to create a customer account, we collect the credentials and profile details you choose to provide.

  • Marketing communications. If you opt in to receive marketing communications, we collect your email address and, if you choose to provide it, your name.

  • Contact form submissions. When you contact us through the Site, we collect your name, email address, and the contents of your message.

  • Gift and recipient details. If you send an item as a gift, we collect the recipient's name and shipping address in order to deliver it.

We do not ask for more information than we need, and you may always choose not to provide certain information, though doing so may limit your ability to place Orders or use certain features.

5. Information Collected Automatically

When you visit the Site, certain information is collected automatically through our ecommerce platform and the technologies described in Section 6. This includes:

  • IP address and approximate geographic location

  • Browser type and device information

  • Pages viewed, referring pages, and the date and time of your visit

  • Items viewed, added to your cart, or purchased

This information helps us understand how the Site is used, keep it secure, and improve the shopping experience.

6. Cookies

The Site uses cookies and similar technologies. Cookies are small text files stored on your device that allow the Site to function properly, remember your cart, keep you signed in, and help us understand Site traffic.

Our use of cookies is described in detail in our Cookie Policy, which explains the categories of cookies we use and how you can control them. In brief, we use essential cookies required for checkout and security, functional cookies that remember your preferences, and analytics cookies that measure Site performance.

7. Analytics

We use analytics tools to understand how visitors use the Site, including which products are viewed most often and how customers move through checkout. Our platform provides built-in analytics (Squarespace Analytics). These tools collect the automatically gathered information described in Section 5 in aggregated or pseudonymous form.

Analytics data is used for internal purposes only: improving the Site, planning inventory, and making the shopping experience better. We do not sell analytics data.

8. Marketing Emails

If you opt in to receive marketing communications from Severedwing, we may send you emails about new arrivals, restocks, events, and offers. Every marketing email will include an unsubscribe link, and you may opt out at any time. Opting out of marketing does not affect transactional emails, such as order confirmations and shipping notices.

9. Third-Party Service Providers

We share personal information with a small number of service providers who help us operate the business. These include:

  • Our ecommerce platform (Squarespace), which hosts the Site and stores Order and customer data

  • Payment processors (Section 10)

  • Shipping carriers (Section 11)

  • Service providers we may use to send marketing communications

  • Analytics providers (Section 7)

Each provider receives only the information necessary to perform its function and is obligated to protect it. We do not sell your personal information, and we do not share it with third parties for their own independent marketing purposes.

We may also disclose personal information if required by law, to respond to lawful requests from public authorities, to enforce our Terms and Conditions, or to protect the rights, safety, or property of Severedwing, our customers, or others.

10. Payment Processing

Payments on the Site are processed through Squarespace Payments. When you enter payment card details at checkout, that information is handled through the payment processing services supporting checkout. Severedwing does not store your full payment card number.

11. Shipping

To deliver your Order, we share your name, shipping address, and, where required by the carrier, your phone number and email address with our shipping carriers, such as USPS, UPS, and FedEx. Carriers use this information to deliver packages and provide tracking updates. Additional details about delivery are set out in our Shipping Policy.

12. Communications

We may contact you for the following purposes:

  • Transactional communications, such as order confirmations, shipping notifications, and responses to your inquiries. These are a necessary part of doing business with you and cannot be opted out of while an Order is in progress.

  • Marketing communications, as described in Section 8, which you may opt out of at any time.

  • Service announcements, such as material changes to this Privacy Policy or to the Site.

13. Data Retention

We keep personal information only as long as we need it. In general:

  • Order records are retained for as long as necessary to fulfill the Order, handle returns, and satisfy tax, accounting, and legal requirements.

  • Marketing subscription information is retained until you unsubscribe or ask us to delete it.

  • Contact form messages are retained as long as needed to resolve your inquiry and for a reasonable period afterward.

When information is no longer needed, we delete it or render it anonymous.

14. Security

We take reasonable administrative, technical, and physical measures to protect personal information, including hosting the Site on a platform that provides encryption in transit (HTTPS) and relying on PCI-compliant payment processors. No method of transmission or storage is completely secure, however, and we cannot guarantee absolute security. If we become aware of a breach affecting your personal information, we will notify you as required by applicable law.

15. Your Rights and Choices

Regardless of where you live, you may:

  • Access or update the personal information we hold about you by contacting us

  • Unsubscribe from marketing emails using the link in any marketing message

  • Manage cookies as described in our Cookie Policy

  • Request deletion of your personal information, subject to records we are required to keep for legal, tax, or accounting purposes

To exercise any of these choices, contact us using the information in Section 21. We will respond within a reasonable time and, where a specific law applies, within the timeframe that law requires.

16. California Privacy Rights

If you are a California resident, the California Consumer Privacy Act, as amended by the California Privacy Rights Act (together, the "CCPA"), may provide you with additional rights, including the right to know what personal information we collect and how we use it, the right to request deletion or correction, and the right to not be discriminated against for exercising these rights.

Note on applicability: The CCPA applies only to businesses that meet certain thresholds, including annual gross revenues above $25 million or the buying, selling, or sharing of personal information of 100,000 or more California residents. As an independent boutique, Severedwing may not currently meet these thresholds. We nonetheless honor the spirit of these rights: we do not sell or share personal information as those terms are defined under the CCPA, and California residents may submit any of the requests described in Section 15 by contacting us.

If we are or become subject to the CCPA, we will respond to verified requests within the timeframes it requires, and we will not discriminate against you for exercising your rights.

17. Other U.S. State Privacy Rights

A growing number of states, including Colorado, Connecticut, Texas, Virginia, and others, have enacted consumer privacy laws granting residents rights similar to those described in Section 16, such as the rights to access, correct, delete, and obtain a copy of personal information, and to opt out of targeted advertising, sale of personal information, and certain profiling.

Like the CCPA, these laws generally apply only above certain thresholds of revenue or data volume. Whether or not a particular law applies to Severedwing, residents of any state may submit the requests described in Section 15, and we will honor them wherever reasonably possible. If we deny a request pursuant to an applicable state law, that law may give you the right to appeal, and we will explain how to do so in our response.

18. Children's Privacy

The Site is intended for a general adult audience and is not directed at children. We do not knowingly collect personal information from children under the age of 13. If you believe a child has provided us with personal information, please contact us and we will delete it.

19. Business Transfers

If Severedwing is involved in a merger, acquisition, financing, reorganization, or sale of all or a portion of its assets, personal information may be transferred as part of that transaction. Any successor will be required to honor the commitments made in this Privacy Policy or to notify you of material changes.

20. Changes to This Policy

We may update this Privacy Policy from time to time to reflect changes in our practices, technology, or legal requirements. When we do, we will revise the Effective Date at the top of this page and, for material changes, provide additional notice on the Site or by email. Your continued use of the Site after an update constitutes acceptance of the revised policy.
